What’s the deal with Airtel’s new and really cheap Android-specific data plans? The answer is in the small print.
The new plans are advertised to gift subscribers 2GB for N2000 and 4.5 GB for N3500 on a 30-day subscription. That amounts to as little as N1000 for every 1.5GB. If that seems to you like a bargain too good to be true, especially by current standards, it is.
Here’s some interesting info Airtel has managed to conveniently wrap under a quite inconspicuous ‘FAQs’ button at the bottom of the page.
Airtel’s Cheap Android Data Plans Actually Cost More Than You Think
That’s right, every time you use this internet plan between peak periods (6 am to 10 pm) you are actually charged 1.5MB for every 1MB you use. This means that by the time you have actually used up 1GB, your data balance will read instead that you are 1.5GB short. Amazing stuff.
The good news is that if you can stay up between 10 pm and 6 am everyday, you won’t have to deal with the extra charges. The night owls are smiling now.
However, for we regular humans, the “2GB for N2000″ plan is in reality “1.3 GB for N2000″ while the “4.5GB for N3500″ plan is actually “3GB for N3500″. Still trumps every smartphone specific data plan out there. Yay for Airtel.
